Lebanon declared Israel's withdrawal from two trial zones in the south as a precondition for its participation in the new round of negotiations planned in Rome. A Lebanese official source told Al Jazeera that Israel has not fulfilled the requirements of the framework agreement signed in Washington.
The source accused Israel of violating the agreement, saying, 'Lebanon insists that Israel fulfill all its commitments before moving to new negotiation steps.' The source added, 'The framework agreement stipulates that Israel take practical steps, but so far this has not been adhered to.'
Earlier, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam had stressed the need to accelerate Israel's withdrawal from the trial zones. In a statement today, President Aoun said his visit to Washington on July 21 'reflects the unprecedented US interest in Lebanon and its support for finding a permanent solution to Israel's war and attacks on Lebanon and for achieving stability in the Middle East.'
Aoun expressed hope that his meeting with US President Donald Trump would bring 'positive results for Lebanon.' Five rounds of negotiations had previously been held in Washington under US mediation, with a framework agreement signed at the end of last month during the latest round.
The agreement envisages the disarmament of Hezbollah, Israel's gradual withdrawal from areas it advanced into in southern Lebanon, and the deployment of the Lebanese army starting from the two 'trial' zones. Despite this, Israeli forces have not yet withdrawn from any of the areas they occupy in southern Lebanon. Israeli attacks continue to cause deaths and injuries in various parts of southern Lebanon.
