The losses suffered by women and girls in Gaza are among the main indicators of the scale of the humanitarian crisis in the region. Sofia Kaltorp, director of the Geneva office of UN Women, said that approximately 50,000 women and girls have been killed or severely wounded since October 2023.
Kaltorp made the assessment at the UN's weekly press briefing in Geneva. She said that most of the casualties in Gaza were recorded during the first two years of Israel's attacks.
More than 38,000 women and girls killed
According to figures cited by Kaltorp, more than 38,000 of the women and girls who were killed or severely wounded had lost their lives. Approximately 11,700 people suffered severe injuries resulting in lifelong disabilities.
This total amounts to one in every 21 women and girls in Gaza.
Losses continued after the ceasefire
Kaltorp said that women and girls continued to be killed and injured after the ceasefire agreement took effect. Since the ceasefire came into force in October 2025, 277 women and girls have been killed in Gaza.

The director of the Geneva office of UN Women called for the ceasefire to be fully implemented in Gaza and for international law to be respected. Kaltorp also called for those responsible for violations to be held accountable and for women and girls to be protected.
Overall toll in Gaza
According to figures released by Gaza's Health Ministry through Thursday, 1,471 Palestinians were killed and 5,189 injured in incidents described as violations of the ceasefire agreement by Israel.
Since the war began in October 2023, more than 74,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 175,000 injured in Gaza. Approximately 90 percent of the infrastructure in the region has been damaged.
