The Palestinian Authority said that measures targeting Al-Aqsa Mosque’s existing historical and legal status, along with attacks on places of worship in the West Bank, could trigger a religious conflict with regional and global consequences.
The authority said that on Tuesday, settlers attempted to set fire to a room near the Nuruddin Zengi Mosque in the town of Bazarya, northwest of Nablus, and wrote racist slogans on the mosque’s walls. At the same time, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir raided Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The statement said that targeting mosques and other places of worship, carrying out repeated raids on Al-Aqsa Mosque and allowing Talmudic rituals in its courtyards were not isolated provocations. It described these practices as part of a dangerous plan aimed at changing the existing historical and legal status of Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The Palestinian Authority held the Israeli government responsible for the attacks and the accompanying inflammatory rhetoric. The statement said that East Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian holy sites are an integral part of the occupied Palestinian territories, stressing that the 144-dunam Al-Aqsa Mosque is entirely an Islamic mosque.
Call to the United Nations
The Palestinian Authority called on the United Nations, particularly the UN Security Council, to take action. It called for effective measures to stop Israel’s attacks on holy sites and for international protection for the Palestinian people and holy sites.
Alleged attack on a mosque in Bazarya
Local sources said that settlers attempted to remove the doors of the Nuruddin Zengi Mosque. After failing, they set fire to a room near the mosque and wrote threatening slogans in Hebrew in the area. One of the inscriptions reportedly read, “Huckabee, greetings from the terrorists,” addressing Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel.
Last month, Huckabee described violent acts carried out by settlers in the Palestinian town of Qusra and other parts of the West Bank as “the dictionary definition of terrorism.” Huckabee was also alleged to embrace Christian Zionist ideas and to argue that Israel has the right to control a broad area stretching from the Nile to the Euphrates.
Condemnation from the Palestinian Ministry of Endowments
The Palestinian Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs condemned the attack in Bazarya. The ministry described the targeting of mosques and places of worship as a systematic and dangerous escalation intended to provoke Muslims’ feelings.
The ministry also called on international and human rights organizations to assume responsibility for protecting places of worship and to stop the repeated attacks on Palestinian towns and villages.
Settler attacks in the West Bank
Settler attacks targeting Palestinians, their property and their livelihoods have increased in recent days in various parts of the occupied West Bank. The attacks have taken place alongside Israel’s ongoing raids and military operations in the area.
According to Palestinian statistics, the occupied West Bank has 141 settlements and 224 illegal settlement outposts. Approximately 750,000 Israeli settlers live in these areas, including 250,000 in 15 settlements in East Jerusalem.
