Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said BRICS countries should develop joint mechanisms to counter economic pressure and political interference.
Speaking at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, Pezeshkian said Iran had entered a more dangerous stage in terms of economic pressure. He said the world was going through one of its most difficult periods and warned that the increased use of economic tools for coercion threatened other countries’ legitimate trade. He also asked how BRICS would respond to these challenges.
Regional impact of economic pressure
The Iranian president argued that economic pressure had reached a more dangerous stage following the war with the United States and Israel. Pezeshkian said the process had shown that economic security could not be considered separately from national and regional security, in addition to causing human and material losses.
Pezeshkian said the effects of trade, energy, infrastructure and financial systems coming under political or military pressure could extend beyond national borders. He said this could affect regional stability and the global economy.
Pezeshkian also said Iran had faced extensive sanctions in recent years. He said BRICS’ strength would become more visible as it moved from potential cooperation to practical cooperation.
Call for trade in local currencies
Pezeshkian said BRICS should establish conditions under which no country could obstruct the legitimate trade of other states and called for expanding the use of national currencies in mutual trade.
Pezeshkian announced that Iran was ready to play a strategic partner role for BRICS in energy and transport supply chains. He said Tehran could work with the group’s members to build a more open and fair economy.
