Israeli attacks and violations targeting Syria’s sovereignty were discussed during a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa. Putin rejected the attacks and violations and reiterated Russia’s support for Syria’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
According to the Syrian Presidency, the call on Wednesday addressed the development of relations between the two countries and cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Al-Sharaa and Putin also assessed the situation in Syria and the latest developments in the region.
Coordination for Syria’s and the region’s stability
The two sides emphasized the importance of maintaining coordination, consultations and communication in ways that serve their common interests. These contacts are intended to support security and stability in Syria and the region.
The Kremlin also announced that bilateral relations and developments in Syria had been discussed during the call. According to the statement, Putin and al-Sharaa expressed their readiness to deepen political dialogue and expand cooperation, particularly in the trade, economic and humanitarian fields.
Russia’s support for Syria’s sovereignty
Putin reiterated Russia’s principled position in support of Syria’s unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty. The Kremlin said this approach also includes improving conditions in Syria and creating the necessary conditions for the country’s long-term reconstruction.
At the end of the call, the two sides agreed to maintain contact.
Developments in the Golan and southern Syria
Israel has kept most of the Golan Heights under occupation since 1967. After the government of Bashar al-Assad ended in Syria on December 8, 2024, Israel announced that the ceasefire-line agreement was no longer valid and took control of Syria’s buffer zone and several locations, including the Syrian side of Jabal al-Sheikh.
Israel has carried out near-daily cross-border incursions in southern Syria, particularly in the rural areas of Daraa and Quneitra provinces. The incursions have included arrests, the establishment of checkpoints and searches of pedestrians.
