Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman and Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam discussed bilateral relations as well as regional developments. During the phone call, they focused on advancing cooperation and maintaining joint coordination.
The two sides assessed diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and strengthening security and stability. They also expressed support for efforts to reach a comprehensive agreement that would safeguard freedom of navigation and establish lasting peace in the region.
Mohammed bin Abdulrahman said Qatar supports these diplomatic initiatives. The Qatari prime minister and foreign minister also reaffirmed his country’s support for Lebanon’s stability and territorial integrity, and said Qatar would continue to stand with the Lebanese people.
Rising military tensions in southern Lebanon
The phone call took place as military tensions in southern Lebanon have risen in recent days. The Israeli army claimed that its operations in the area were carried out in response to the downing of an unmanned aerial vehicle.
Israel also claimed that the unmanned aerial vehicle had been sent by Hezbollah elements in Lebanon against its forces operating in the country’s south. The claim was made alongside Israel’s definition of the security zone it uses for the area.
Israeli airstrikes on areas in southern Lebanon have continued despite an agreement signed under U.S. mediation on June 26, 2026. The agreement provides for the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory and the deployment of the Lebanese army in those areas.
More than 4,000 people killed in the attacks
Lebanese authorities said that more than 4,000 people had been killed and more than 12,000 injured in the attacks that have continued since March 2, 2026. More than 1 million people have been displaced by the fighting.
Israel has occupied some areas in southern Lebanon, keeping control of some for decades and of others since the 2023–2024 war. During the current attacks, Israel has also expanded the areas under its control in Lebanese territory.
