Syria’s Interior Ministry internal security forces announced the detention of General Jalal Kamil Saqr, former commander of the 18th Infantry Brigade. The operation was conducted by the Latakia Internal Security Command and the Counterterrorism Directorate after Saqr had been monitored for an extended period.
Saqr, who is from the village of Besin in the countryside of Qardaha, was detained on allegations that he was involved in war crimes against civilians and arbitrary detention practices during the years of the uprising in Syria.
Allegations against Saqr
In a statement, the internal security forces alleged that Saqr had taken part in military operations targeting civilians in Damascus and Eastern Ghouta. They also alleged that he had directed arbitrary detention campaigns in the southern province of Daraa.
Saqr served as chief of staff and deputy commander of the 14th Division before becoming the division’s commander, a position he held until mid-2016. General Saqr then moved to the Operations Directorate in Damascus, where he worked until leaving office on May 1, 2017.
Detentions over alleged violations in Syria
Syrian authorities periodically announce the detention of people accused of involvement in violations against civilians during the years of the uprising that began in Daraa in 2011.
Following the uprising, opposition forces entered Damascus, and Bashar al-Assad’s government was overthrown on December 8, 2024.
