QatarEnergy signed two long-term agreements to purchase up to 4 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas annually from US company Cheniere Energy through 2054. The agreements are the first of their kind under which Qatar, one of the world’s largest LNG exporters, will purchase US gas.
The agreements were signed by QatarEnergy Chief Executive Officer Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi and Cheniere Chief Executive Officer Jack Fusco. They provide for Qatar to receive 2 million tonnes annually from the Sabine Pass facility in Louisiana and 2 million tonnes from the Corpus Christi facility in Texas, with supplies set to begin in the early 2030s.

One million tonnes of the Sabine Pass allocation is subject to a final investment decision on the facility’s expansion. QatarEnergy will transport the cargoes from the US facilities after purchasing them on a free-on-board basis.
The agreements come after Qatar’s production was affected by the war with Iran, which hit the Ras Laffan facility, while shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted.
