Qatar is continuing its mediation efforts to reduce tensions in the region. A delegation of Qatari negotiators has traveled to the Iranian capital Tehran to de-escalate tensions between the US and Iran.
During the delegation's meetings with Iranian officials, the implementation of the Islamabad Agreement signed on June 14, the recent escalation of tensions, and navigation disputes in the Strait of Hormuz are expected to be discussed. The talks are being conducted in coordination with the US.
The agreement and the escalation that followed
The US and Iran signed the Islamabad Agreement on June 14 to end the war. The agreement provided for a 60-day negotiation period for a final accord.
However, the US military launched new attacks on Iran on July 8, and Iran responded by targeting US bases in neighboring countries. Qatar's mediation effort aims to de-escalate this tension.
