American actor Mark Ruffalo, known for playing Hulk in Marvel films, surprised the audience at American rapper Macklemore’s “Free Palestine” concert in Dublin, the Irish capital, with a video message shown on the giant screen.
“Keep fighting for a free Palestine,” Ruffalo said in his message, adding: “There will be no peace unless there is equality.” The message drew loud applause from the audience at the 3Arena on Monday evening.
Concert follows removal from Sheeran’s tour
The concert came about six weeks after Macklemore was dropped from British singer Ed Sheeran’s U.S. stadium tour after he chanted “Free Palestine” during concerts at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Macklemore said on stage that the phrase “Free Palestine” had become “more controversial than the suffering that made it necessary,” arguing that freedom based on the oppression of others “is not freedom at all.”
Concert proceeds to support Palestinians
Irish singer Hozier and rap group Kneecap also performed at the concert, which featured a filmed performance by a children’s choir from Gaza. All proceeds from the concert will go to organizations supporting Palestinians, including Gaza Soup Kitchen, Medical Aid for Palestinians and the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund. Hozier called on the Irish government to grant visas to 55 students from Gaza who had received scholarships.
