The Sudanese army captured the Um Siyale area, which had been under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), following an attack. Full control was established in the operation carried out on Saturday.
According to military sources speaking to Anadolu Agency, a comprehensive assault by the army and supporting forces inflicted heavy human and equipment losses on RSF elements. Footage shared on social media shows Sudanese soldiers securing the area and destroyed military vehicles.
Um Siyale is located near Barra, the second-largest city in North Kordofan, and about 57 kilometers north of the state capital El Obeyd. No official statement has yet been issued by the Sudanese army or the RSF regarding the operation.
This development came a day after Sudanese officials announced they had captured the Burber area, where an RSF attack had killed 15 civilians and wounded seven.
As clashes continue in the region, El Obeyd has been the target of RSF drone attacks for nearly two months, striking a power plant, fuel stations, and other civilian sites. Dozens of civilians have been killed in these attacks.
The United Nations warned in May that drone attacks in Kordofan had increased, reporting that at least 880 civilians were killed in such attacks between January and April.
Fierce fighting between the Sudanese army and the RSF has been ongoing in the states of North, West, and South Kordofan since October 25.
The war that erupted in Sudan in April 2023 has caused a massive humanitarian crisis, leaving tens of thousands dead and displacing around 13 million people.
