Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit with Israel Katz on Wednesday to the Israeli-occupied part of Mount Hermon drew a reaction from Syria. Syria’s Foreign Ministry condemned the visit, describing it as a blatant violation of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The ministry described Netanyahu’s entry as “provocative.” It said Israel’s continued attacks and operations inside Syria constituted a dangerous escalation for regional security and stability, and held Israel responsible for any consequences that might arise.
Syria called on the United Nations, international organizations and influential states to take action to stop Israel’s attacks. The statement also called for a return to the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement of Forces.
During the visit, Netanyahu said Israel had established unprecedented “absolute control” over the area extending from Mount Hermon to the Yarmouk River. He argued that they would not allow “terrorist forces” to establish a presence near their borders.
Israel Katz also said that Israel intended to maintain its occupation in the area. In a separate video, Katz said, “We are on Mount Hermon, and we will not leave.”
Israel has occupied Syria’s Golan Heights since 1967 and unilaterally annexed the area in 1981. The annexation is not recognized by the international community.
Israeli forces also expanded the area under their control inside Syrian territory during recent regional developments.
