Syrian security forces detained five senior air force personnel who served under the Assad regime in Tartus governorate as part of an investigation into airstrikes on areas inhabited by civilians.
Abdul Aal Mohammad Abdul Aal, head of internal security in Tartus, said five people were detained during security operations conducted by special teams in coordination with the Counterterrorism Directorate.
Identities of the five detainees
Officials said those detained were Major General Mohammad Fajr Ali, pilot Brigadier General Abdullah Ali Mualla, pilot Colonel Nidal Hussein Saleh, Colonel Mohammad Ali Salim and pilot Lieutenant Colonel Talib Abdul Karim Hassan.
Investigation findings and military records indicate that the five played roles in planning, directing and carrying out airstrikes within the scope of their duties and responsibilities.
Allegations involving residential areas and civilian infrastructure
The attacks involved the use of aircraft, air bases and field command centers. Residential areas and infrastructure were damaged, civilians were forcibly displaced, and many people were killed or wounded.
Officials alleged that the detainees used their military ranks and experience in fighter jet and helicopter aviation to participate in numerous crimes and violations against the Syrian people.
Operation targeting nine pilots in Latakia
In a separate statement, Abdulaziz al-Ahmed, commander of internal security in Latakia, announced that nine pilots had been detained on September 10 following monitoring, surveillance, intelligence gathering and investigations.
The attacks linked to these operations caused widespread destruction in cities and towns, while homes and civilian infrastructure were destroyed and many people were killed or wounded.
Syrian authorities periodically announce the detention of individuals accused of violations against civilians during the period spanning the conflict that began in March 2011 and the overthrow of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024.
