Spanish club Tenerife announced that its forward Jesús de Miguel, 30, died on Tuesday morning at Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital, a day after suffering cardiorespiratory arrest following a violent collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during the teams’ match in the 12th round of Spain’s second division.
The incident occurred in stoppage time at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López, after Andorra came from two goals down to level the score at 2-2 with goals in the 80th and 87th minutes. De Miguel ran toward a long ball to start a counterattack, but Owono came out of his penalty area and collided with him, leading with his knee. The impact struck the forward in the chest, and he fell unconscious.
Resuscitated on the pitch before his condition worsened overnight
Referee Pérez Hernández showed the goalkeeper a red card, and the match was stopped. Medical staff performed resuscitation on the player on the pitch before taking him by equipped ambulance to intensive care. The club initially described his condition as “serious but stable” before announcing overnight that his neurological condition had deteriorated.
Tenerife wrote in a statement of mourning: “We are broken with pain, with a lump in our throats, unable to believe that this is real,” adding that “there are no words of comfort.” The player’s family requested respect for their privacy. Sky Sports said Spanish police were investigating the death as a possible case of involuntary manslaughter.
Piqué: “I’m sorry from the bottom of my heart”
Andorra said it was “heartbroken and shocked,” while its president, Gerard Piqué, the former Barcelona and Spain defender, wrote: “I’m sorry with all my soul. Rest in peace, Jesús.” Spanish media said goalkeeper Owono was devastated and wanted to apologize to the player’s family. The Spanish Football Federation postponed the King’s Cup and Queen’s Cup matches scheduled for Tuesday “as an expression of respect and solidarity.” Real Madrid players observed a minute’s silence during training, while Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Sevilla and Rayo Vallecano also paid tribute to him.
De Miguel was born in Madrid in 1996 and came through Leganés’ academy. He spent most of his career in the lower divisions with Fuenlabrada, Navalcarnero, Unionistas de Salamanca and Castellón, with whom he won promotion to the second division in 2024. He moved to Tenerife in 2025 and helped the club return to the second division this year.
