Iraqi Minister of Communications Mustafa Sanad received Türkiye’s ambassador to Baghdad, Anıl Bora İnan, on Monday. The two sides discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations between Iraq and Türkiye, according to the media office of the Ministry of Communications. The ministry said the Turkish side expressed a desire during the meeting to establish a transit project passing through Iraq, which would enhance economic cooperation between the two countries.
The Turkish Embassy in Baghdad said the meeting addressed issues on the two countries’ joint agenda and published photographs from the meeting, which was attended by several ministry officials and members of the Turkish delegation.
Iraq as a corridor between the Gulf and Europe
The Turkish proposal comes as Baghdad seeks to turn its geographic location into a corridor for trade, transportation and data flows between the Gulf and Europe. At the forefront of these efforts is the Development Road project, which links the Grand Faw Port in Basra to the Turkish border through a network of roads and railways. Iraq, Türkiye, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates signed a quadrilateral memorandum of understanding on the project in April 2024. The ministry disclosed no further details about the nature of the proposed transit project or the timeline for discussing it.

Türkiye is one of Iraq’s largest trading partners, and relations between the two countries have recently seen growing activity on energy, water, transportation and security issues.
