U.S. President Donald Trump said Libya “cannot remain a route for irregular migration, and this must end now” in a post on Truth Social praising the Libyan people and affirming Washington’s support for unifying Libya’s institutions.
Trump described Libyans as a “proud, resilient and hospitable people who deserve peace and prosperity,” adding: “We respect the Libyan people and the sacrifices made by brave Libyans in fighting ISIS, the common enemy of our two peoples.”
He said the two countries share a strong and lasting partnership in combating terrorism, based on their joint success in defeating ISIS in Libya. He also affirmed the United States’ commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, supporting the unification of Libya and its institutions, and moving toward national elections. “I want them to unite, reclaim their sovereignty and enjoy the secure and prosperous future they deserve,” he said.

Libya protests “offensive” remarks
Trump’s post came after Libya’s Foreign Ministry summoned the U.S. chargé d’affaires on Sunday to protest remarks Trump made during a campaign rally in Perry, Georgia. He said Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff had supported a bill “to bring armies of immigrants from terrorism-plagued countries such as Libya, Yemen, Haiti and Somalia,” using an offensive description he had previously applied to those countries during his first term.
Libya’s Foreign Ministry described the remarks as “offensive,” stressing its rejection of any statements that “harm the dignity of its people or diminish their standing.” The rival governments in eastern and western Libya also condemned Trump’s remarks, rejecting the use of Libya in “electoral disputes.”
Libya has been divided between two rival governments in Tripoli and the east for years. It is a major departure point for migrants seeking to reach Europe across the Mediterranean.
