Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry congratulated Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed on his election as secretary-general of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. The ministry wished Mauritania’s candidate success and ease in his new role.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the ministry said Ahmed had been unanimously elected secretary-general at the organisation’s 23rd Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers, held in Jeddah.
The statement said the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation was expected to continue contributing to efforts to overcome the common challenges facing the Islamic world in the coming period.
Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry also said it expected the organisation to continue playing an active role in defending common causes, particularly the Palestinian issue, and in strengthening cooperation and solidarity among member states.
