The first session of the US-sponsored Lebanon-Israel talks in Florida ended Tuesday after approximately six hours. The technical military meetings are scheduled to continue Wednesday.
The talks were held at the headquarters of the US Central Command in Tampa, Florida. The agenda included implementing the framework agreement and the "pilot areas" where the Israeli army’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon is planned.
Withdrawal plan and agreement provisions
The meetings were organized as part of US efforts to monitor implementation of the framework agreement. The talks are taking place as attacks continue in southern Lebanon.
The agreement reached between Beirut and Tel Aviv on June 26 under US auspices calls for Israel’s gradual withdrawal from the occupied territories. Under the arrangement, the Lebanese army is to deploy in these areas and armed groups are to be disarmed.

The agreement also provides for the creation of pilot areas to implement its provisions. However, implementation has so far remained limited to the towns of Furun, Sarifa and Zutar al-Gharbiyah in the Nabatieh region of southern Lebanon, while more than 50 towns remain under occupation.
Toll of the attacks
Despite the agreement, Israel’s attacks on Lebanon continue. At least 4,386 people have been killed, 12,407 wounded and more than 1 million displaced since March 2.
Israel has maintained a presence in some parts of southern Lebanon for decades and in others since the 2023-2024 war. During the latest war, the Israeli army advanced approximately 10 kilometers into Lebanese territory.
