More than 1.6 million children in Yemen's Taiz governorate risk losing access to water, UN agencies warned on Tuesday. UNICEF's representative in Yemen, Akhil Iyer, told reporters in Geneva that water systems serving an estimated 3 million people were at risk as fighting disrupted supply routes, adding that diesel shortages threaten to halt water pumps and the cost of trucked water has tripled.
Iyer said more than 168,000 children had been screened for malnutrition in Taiz this year, with over 52,000, nearly one in three, found to be acutely malnourished. "For children in Taiz, hunger, unsafe water and disease are becoming an increasingly dangerous combination," he warned.

The UN refugee agency said displacement across Yemen exceeded 250,000 people as of Oct. 17, with Taiz accounting for 76% of departures. The World Health Organization warned that 12 hospitals in Taiz have about four days of fuel left and that supplies of 115 of 127 essential medicines would last a week or less.
