A cargo ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an unidentified projectile off the coast of Oman. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that the unnamed vessel was attacked about 20 nautical miles northeast of Al Khasab, Oman.
UKMTO did not provide details on the extent of the damage or the crew's condition, but announced that an investigation has been launched.
Second alert in region
This attack follows another incident in the same area on Sunday. According to UKMTO, the captain of a tanker reported hearing an explosion near the vessel while sailing approximately 20 nautical miles northeast of Khasab. No damage was reported in that incident.
US maintains blockade
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Monday that it continues to enforce its blockade against Iran. As of August 3, US forces had redirected 44 commercial vessels, disabled two, and boarded two others, CENTCOM said.
Iran and Oman discuss new route
These security incidents occurred against the backdrop of diplomatic talks between Iran and Oman. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Bekayi told state television that Tehran is close to an agreement with Oman on a new maritime route in the Strait of Hormuz.
Bekayi emphasized that the proposed arrangement would create a new route in the strategic passage, but stressed that it should not be interpreted as the reopening of the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global oil and liquefied natural gas trade, is at the center of regional tensions. The latest attack is expected to further heighten concerns among commercial shipping operators and international maritime security organizations.
