Wildfires in Canada's British Columbia province intensified over the weekend due to strong winds, triggering a large-scale evacuation. More than 5,000 people were evacuated, and some highways were closed to traffic.
According to the Okanagan Emergency Management, the fire that started on Saturday at Quilpituk Creek has spread to an area of 550 hectares. As a result, evacuation orders were issued for more than 2,000 properties, and over 400 properties were placed under evacuation alert.
The Caesars Landing area near Okanagan Lake was also placed under an evacuation order. Officials stated they are closely monitoring the fire and weather conditions, that the existing evacuation orders are not expected to be lifted, and that new orders may be issued if needed.
The BC Wildfire Service reported that the fire in the North Okanagan region grew from 10 square kilometers to 26 square kilometers over the weekend, more than doubling in size. Due to this rapid spread, the evacuation order in the area was expanded.
As of Sunday, 31 new wildfires had started across the province in the last 24 hours, and 9 of them had been extinguished. While lower temperatures, higher humidity, and easing winds are expected to help bring the fires under control, officials warned that the risk of new fires remains due to drought-stricken vegetation.
