Yemen government forces announced that they had taken full control of the area after clashes at the strategic Mount Karfan south of Taiz.
Maj. Gen. Abdulaziz al-Majidi, chief of staff of the Taiz Military Axis, said government forces had consolidated their control of the mountain with support from the popular resistance in the Bani Omar area. The Armed Forces Media Center published the statement.
More than five Houthis killed in clashes
Al-Majidi said more than five Houthi members were killed and around 20 people were wounded in clashes on Tuesday. He said Houthi forces continued to attack military positions with mortar shells.
The Houthis have not yet issued a statement on their territorial losses in the area.
Mount Karfan overlooks the front line
Mount Karfan is part of the rugged mountain range on the Jerdad-Bani Omar front, located between the al-Shumaytayn and al-Waziya districts. Forces controlling the mountain gain observation capabilities as well as fire control over the surrounding valleys.
The government forces' advance came during a period in which the front lines have shifted since July. During this period, the Houthis had advanced along the western coast toward the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
