Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir said the army was going through a tense and volatile period on all fronts and called for preparations against surprise attacks.
During an assessment with senior military officials, Zamir said the army’s overall level of readiness was being kept on alert against surprise attacks. On his orders, a drill testing a multi-front war scenario was launched.
Operational orders and mobilization preparations under review
The drill is reviewing operational orders and plans at various levels, from the General Staff to units in the field. It is also assessing the raising of the alert level, the mobilization of reserve forces and the functioning of decision-making mechanisms within the chain of command.
The exercise is being conducted as part of military preparations for the period of the Jewish holidays. This period will begin with Rosh Hashanah on September 11, Yom Kippur on September 20 and Sukkot on September 25.
New drill in Eilat and the Arava Valley
The Israeli army will also conduct a large-scale drill in the city of Eilat and the Arava Valley along the border with Jordan. The exercise will address scenarios involving sudden attacks on Israeli territory by land, sea and air, as well as infiltration scenarios.
As Israel’s attacks on Gaza have continued since October 2023, the region has seen two wars with Lebanon and Iran, attacks on Yemen and Qatar, and continuing ground operations and artillery fire in Syria. More than 73,000 people have been killed in the attacks in Gaza.
Israel has also kept parts of the Palestinian territories, Lebanon and Syria under occupation for decades and has not allowed the establishment of an independent Palestinian state envisaged in United Nations resolutions.
