A 33-year-old Palestinian man was killed at the scene on Friday after Israeli police opened fire in the Old City of occupied East Jerusalem.
Israeli police said officers stationed in the Bab al-Amud area had spotted a person whom they alleged was attempting to carry out a stabbing. Police said the Palestinian man died at the scene after officers opened fire.
The identity of the Palestinian man who was killed was not disclosed, and no additional information was provided about the other circumstances of the incident.
Blockade in Bab al-Amud and the Old City
Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that Israeli forces were heavily deployed around Bab al-Amud and the Old City after the incident.
Security measures were tightened as a military blockade was imposed in the area. These measures prevented some Palestinians from reaching the area for morning prayers.
The status of East Jerusalem
Palestinians regard East Jerusalem as the capital of the state they plan to establish in the future. Israel considers both East and West Jerusalem its capital, but this position is not recognized internationally.
