Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called on Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, secretary-general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, to urge Muslim countries to respond to attacks against Iran.
During a phone call on Tuesday, the two discussed the U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran and their impact on regional developments. Araghchi said Muslim countries should take a position against attacks on Iran’s sovereignty and provided information about the latest developments in the region.
Araghchi also congratulated Ahmed, who was elected OIC secretary-general in August. The Iranian minister said he hoped Ahmed would contribute to strengthening cooperation among Muslim countries and invited him to Tehran.
Closure of the Strait of Hormuz and renewed fighting
After the United States and Israel launched their war against Iran on February 28, Tehran closed the Strait of Hormuz, one of the key transit routes for global oil and natural gas exports.
Iran later carried out attacks targeting Israel as well as U.S. bases and facilities in several countries in the region, including Jordan and the Gulf states.
The Islamabad agreement signed between Washington and Tehran on June 17 called for military operations to be halted and for arrangements to begin to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic. However, the agreement later faltered because of disputes over its implementation and maritime transportation through the strait. Fighting resumed in July.
