Worsening security conditions in the Sirba area of West Darfur state have displaced approximately 6,650 people living in 11 villages.
The displacement occurred as the situation deteriorated over the past two days. Clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have also intensified since August 4.
Most families seek refuge in Chad
Most of the displaced families crossed the border and reached Chad. Some families moved to different parts of the Sirba area in West Darfur.
The International Organization for Migration said the situation in the area remained tense and fluid. The organization said it was continuing to closely monitor developments.
Struggle for control in Darfur
Darfur Regional Governor Mini Arko Minawi said in a statement on Tuesday that the Sudanese army and allied forces had made progress against the Rapid Support Forces in the Hajar al-Marfain and Bir Sliba areas of North Darfur state.
Five states in the Darfur region are under the control of the Rapid Support Forces, one of Sudan's 18 states. While parts of North Darfur remain under the army's control, the army holds influence over most of the other 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum.
The war's humanitarian toll grows
The war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has continued since April 2023, following disputes over the integration of the forces.
Tens of thousands of people have been killed since the clashes began. The number of people displaced within the country or forced to move to neighboring countries has reached approximately 13 million.
