The European Union strongly condemned attacks against Palestinians and European diplomats in the West Bank. The incident occurred near the town of Taybeh, east of Ramallah, when a delegation visiting the area during the olive harvest season was stopped on the road.
The delegation included the consuls of France and Belgium, a representative from Poland and officials from the Catholic Church. Masked Israeli settlers blocked the delegation members’ path, and the window of a vehicle belonging to the Belgian consulate was smashed during the attack.
Troops and police arrived three hours later
The delegation’s location and footage of the incident were sent to the area. Although the footage was sent a few minutes after the incident, troops and police arrived in the area three hours later.
The EU’s diplomatic service said that some Israeli representatives had condemned the attacks. It called for those responsible to be held accountable and for concrete measures to be taken to prevent further acts of violence.
EU calls for respect for international law
In its statement, the EU said violence and harassment against Palestinians and journalists had continued during the ongoing olive harvest season. The bloc called on Israel to fully comply with international humanitarian law and human rights law and to halt the expansion of illegal settlements.
Lieberman blamed the government
Avigdor Lieberman, leader of the opposition Yisrael Beiteinu party, accused Netanyahu and the ministers of defense and national security of failing to prevent attacks by Israeli settlers.
Lieberman said the government’s inaction had weakened international support for Israel. Attacks against Palestinians and their property intensified during the olive harvest season, which began at the start of this month.
