The draft resolution on Yemen discussed at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Baghdad faced a condition from Iran calling for justice and balance. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said his country might not support the resolution if this approach was not reflected in the text.
Araghchi said there had been an extensive exchange of views on Yemen. He said Saudi Arabia had presented its own views, while Iran and other countries had offered different assessments, adding that the draft had not yet been finalized and that they expected justice and balance to be maintained in the final resolution and communiqué.
Iran consults with OIC members
Araghchi said a significant number of OIC members had adopted a position close to Saudi Arabia and noted that Tehran was holding extensive consultations with other member states. The Iranian foreign minister said he had stressed in his address at the meeting that a solution to the Yemen crisis was necessary.
Conflict has continued in Yemen since the Houthis seized Sanaa and several provinces in 2014. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 to support Yemen’s internationally recognized government.
The conflict has recently spread to Saudi Arabia, with Houthi attacks on the kingdom targeting oil infrastructure. The Houthis also announced in July that they had imposed a naval blockade.
Seven-day plan for the Strait of Hormuz
Addressing relations with the United States, Araghchi said Iran’s conditions had been conveyed to Washington במסגרת a “seven-day plan.” He said the United States had presented its own views and that Tehran was preparing a response.
Araghchi said the plan remained on the table from Iran’s perspective, adding that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen on the sixth day and negotiations would begin on the seventh day if the United States fulfilled the conditions. He also said they did not believe there was sincerity on the U.S. side.
OIC presidency passes from Türkiye to Iraq
The meeting in Baghdad was held as the 52nd session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers. Iraq took over the council’s rotating presidency from Türkiye.
Foreign ministers and representatives from member states of the 57-member organization attended the meeting. Discussions addressed developments in Yemen and Palestine, as well as regional and international issues.
Araghchi said Iran attached particular importance to neighboring Iraq and expressed hope that Baghdad’s presidency and the appointment of a new OIC secretary-general would give the organization fresh momentum. He said they expected the OIC to play a constructive role in resolving disputes among Muslim countries.
