Traffic on the route connecting Sweida in southern Syria with the capital Damascus came to a complete halt on Saturday. The Sweida Media Directorate said the closure occurred at the Umm al-Zaytun checkpoint in northern Sweida.
The directorate said that civilians, travelers and students were prevented from passing through the checkpoint. It attributed the road closure to groups that Syrian authorities described as “unlawful.”
Access to the governorate building also blocked
The same groups also prevented administrative staff and employees from reaching the governorate building in the Little Sura area of the Sweida countryside three days before the road was closed, officials said.
Employees tried to reach the building to address citizens’ service needs and continue their duties, but they were stopped at the Umm al-Zaytun checkpoint.

Attacks on security points in the Sweida countryside
Syrian authorities said the groups attacked Interior Security Forces positions in the western Sweida countryside on Tuesday evening using drones carrying explosives.
The authorities also said that gunfire was directed at Interior Security Forces positions and homes in the Mezraa area of the western countryside on October 2.
The attacks occurred about a month and a half after four security personnel were wounded on August 31 while countering attacks that authorities said groups had carried out in the western Sweida countryside.
