The courthouse in Taiz, Yemen, was targeted by mortar fire. Yemen's official Saba news agency, citing local sources, reported that the Houthis carried out the attack.
The attack took place on Saturday evening at the courthouse complex in the Jebel Jarra district of central Taiz. The mortar rounds were fired from Houthi positions north of the city. No deaths or injuries were reported.
The Saba agency described the attack as 'part of the ongoing attacks by Houthi terrorist militias on civilian residential areas and civilian facilities in Taiz.' The Houthi group has yet to comment on the attack.
The incident occurred amid escalating tensions between the Yemeni government and the Houthis. Sultan al-Arada, a member of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, said the Houthis 'only believe in the option of war' and described the fight against them as 'fateful.' The Houthis, meanwhile, threatened to escalate their actions depending on developments in the coming hours and days.
Fighting intensifies in the region
In recent hours, activity has increased in Yemen. Airstrikes targeted Houthi positions in the western province of Hudaydah, the central province of Marib, and the northern province of al-Jawf.
The Houthis announced they had targeted facilities belonging to oil company Aramco in Jazan and Yanbu in western Saudi Arabia with dozens of ballistic missiles and drones.
Background of the war in Yemen
After the Houthis took control of several provinces including the capital Sanaa in September 2014, a Saudi-led Arab coalition intervened militarily in 2015 to support the Yemeni government. Although a relative calm has prevailed on the front lines since April 2022, mutual attacks and clashes have reignited recently. Peace efforts to end the nearly 12-year conflict remain uncertain.
