Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced that a US aircraft carrier and a destroyer were targeted with ballistic missiles.
Iran’s Radio and Television Organization released footage it said showed the attack, claiming that the ships were struck with Iranian-made “Qassem Basir” missiles and then moved away from the area.
Iranian authorities claimed that the operation was carried out in response to the United States targeting three oil tankers belonging to the Revolutionary Guards.
Mutual statements from Iran and the United States
In an earlier statement, the Revolutionary Guards also said that a US aircraft carrier and a destroyer it identified as having taken part in the naval blockade of Iranian ships had been targeted with ballistic missiles.
The United States did not immediately respond to Iran’s announcement concerning its warships. The US military said on Saturday that three oil tankers belonging to the Revolutionary Guards had been destroyed after Iran targeted two US warships in the area.
Clashes resume in the Strait of Hormuz
After the war between the United States and Israel and Iran began on February 28, 2026, Tehran closed the Strait of Hormuz, an important route for global oil and natural gas exports.
Iran later carried out attacks on US bases and positions that it said were located in several countries in the region, including Israel, Jordan and the Gulf states.
Washington and Tehran signed the “Islamabad Accord” on June 17, 2026. The text called for military operations to stop and for preparations to begin to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic. The White House sent the text of the agreement to Congress the following day.
However, the accord could not be implemented because of disputes over its implementation and maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, and clashes resumed in July.
