Members of a second security cell allegedly directly linked to an agent network affiliated with the former regime were detained in Idlib. Syrian authorities said the operation was carried out in the city in the country’s northwest.
Brig. Gen. Ghassan Bakir, commander of Idlib’s Internal Security, said the operation was conducted as part of the ongoing investigation and security monitoring related to the network detained on June 15.
Operation targets second cell in Idlib
According to Bakir’s statement, the Internal Security Forces and the Counterterrorism Administration located the second cell after careful monitoring and surveillance. The cell’s members were detained in Idlib following the operation.
The number and identities of those detained were not disclosed. No information was provided about the type of activities the cell was involved in.
The relevant units are continuing their investigation to uncover the cell’s activities and connections. The case will be referred to the competent judicial authorities after legal procedures involving those detained are completed.
Network detained on June 15
The network detained in Idlib on June 15 had been linked to espionage and the coordination of bomb attacks during the former regime. Authorities had announced that the investigation found network members had monitored and filmed military positions and provided coordinates to former regime forces so that those positions could be targeted.
Syrian authorities also periodically announce the detention of people allegedly involved in violations against civilians during the years of the uprising that began in 2011. The former regime was removed from power on December 8, 2024, after opposition forces entered Damascus.
