The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that dozens of targets in Iran were hit with precision munitions in operations that started Sunday night and continued Monday. The statement said the operation was undertaken to reduce Iran's capability to target international shipping passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, in response to the attacks, announced they had carried out retaliatory strikes on US military targets and bases in Bahrain, Jordan and Kuwait. Air raid sirens sounded in Bahrain, and the Kuwaiti army reported intercepting hostile air targets. The Jordanian army also announced it had destroyed four Iranian missiles.
Shock in oil markets
The escalation of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s announcement that it had closed the strait caused a sudden spike in oil prices. As Asian futures opened, US crude WTI rose 4.5% to above $74 per barrel.
Regional reactions
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry expressed deep concern over the escalating regional tensions. Iran’s Foreign Ministry, meanwhile, stated that the US attacks had “caused the return of insecurity to the Strait of Hormuz” and “undermined all efforts to establish peace in the region.”
Casualties in Iran
Iranian state media reported that at least two people were killed in US strikes in southern and western Iran. Targets were hit on Qeshm Island and Bandar Abbas near the Strait of Hormuz, as well as in Khuzestan province on the Iraqi border. One person was killed and four wounded in a strike on a water pumping station in Mahshahr. On Farur Island in the Persian Gulf, a telecommunications worker died and two others were injured.
Attack on Oman and protest
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they had also struck Oman, a country rarely targeted. Oman summoned the Iranian ambassador and handed him an official protest note. The attack came hours after Oman hosted the Iranian foreign minister for talks on the Strait of Hormuz.
Ship attack and rescue operation
On Sunday, a Cyprus-flagged container ship was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, catching fire and forcing the crew to abandon ship. India said one of its sailors was missing, while Oman announced it had rescued 23 crew members from the commercial vessel.
Strong statements from leaders
Iran’s supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei said they would avenge his father, who was killed on the first day of the war, and that they had drawn up a list of targets. US President Donald Trump, on Saturday, said any assassination attempt against him would lead to the US “obliterating” Iran.
