The Israel Prison Service punished eight Palestinian prisoners at Lafi Prison by transferring them to solitary confinement and referring them to a disciplinary committee after they made a makeshift cake from leftover food to celebrate the possibility of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir leaving office.
Ben-Gvir boasted about the punishment, saying the prisoners had spent days collecting whatever little food they had, including a spoonful of jam and a slice of bread, to make a cake they could celebrate with if he lost Tuesday’s election. Prison officers found the cake, he said. He added: “They planned their celebration in advance, but their celebration is over,” urging Israelis to vote for his party and not allow the prisoners to celebrate.

Israel Hayom reported that the prisoners hoped the election results would keep Ben-Gvir out of the next government because of the harsh measures he imposed on their detention conditions after taking office.
Prisoners used as an election propaganda tool
The incident occurred two days before the Knesset election scheduled for Tuesday, October 27. Critics described the punishment as retaliatory and accused Ben-Gvir of turning the prisoners’ suffering into election propaganda.
Ben-Gvir has overseen the ministry responsible for prisons since late 2022, except for a short period in early 2025. During that time, he imposed stringent restrictions on the detention conditions of Palestinian prisoners, including reducing food rations.
