Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji reviewed the latest developments in the negotiations with Israel during a phone call with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. Rajji said they considered it important to conclude a negotiating process that would protect national sovereignty and safeguard rights.
The two ministers also discussed geopolitical developments at the regional and international levels, as well as preparations for the Arab League ministerial meeting.
Border and detainee files discussed in Rome
The seventh round of negotiations between Lebanon and Israel concluded in Rome on Thursday under U.S. auspices. The round addressed issues related to implementing the “framework formula” agreement signed on June 26.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said at a Cabinet meeting on Friday that “positive progress” had been made on the border and detainee files during the Rome talks.
The “framework formula” agreement provides for Israel to gradually end its occupation of Lebanese territory. Under the plan, implementation is to begin in some areas through a pilot model, with the Lebanese army deployed in those areas and armed groups disarmed.
Beirut and Cairo prepare for Arab League meeting
Rajji and Abdelatty also discussed preparations for the Arab League ministerial meeting planned for September in Cairo, the capital of Egypt.
The importance of maintaining coordination and consultations between Beirut and Cairo ahead of the meeting was emphasized. Given the sensitive conditions in the region, Arab countries need a common position and more intensive consultations.
The phone call took place as the region experienced periods of military conflict and cautious calm. During the same period, negotiations between the United States and Iran have continued, although they have become more difficult, with the aim of reaching a final agreement to end the war that began on February 28.
