Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Egypt on Tuesday for a two-day official visit ahead of a planned meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Cairo.
Abbas was welcomed at Cairo International Airport by Egyptian Minister of Agriculture Alaa Farouk, along with Egyptian and Palestinian officials.
Humanitarian aid and reconstruction on the agenda
The meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, is expected to address the latest developments in the Palestinian issue, as well as Arab and international matters of mutual interest.
Talks are also expected to cover Egypt’s efforts, in coordination with its regional and international partners, to deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians and rebuild areas severely damaged in the ongoing war.
Regional diplomacy in Cairo
Abbas’s visit comes as Cairo steps up its diplomatic contacts over regional developments. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is also in Cairo on Tuesday to meet with Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
The Palestinian president is also expected to meet with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy at the Arab League headquarters during his visit.
Abbas is accompanied by Palestinian Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh, Palestinian National Council Chairman Rawhi Fattouh, Fatah Central Committee member and intelligence chief Majed Faraj, and other officials.
