Speaking in a message issued for Islamic Unity Week, Iran’s religious leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, called on the leaders of Muslim countries to identify the real enemy, understand its plans and stand up to it.
Addressing the leaders of Western Asian and Gulf countries in particular, Khamenei said unity among Muslims was necessary to achieve the “beloved and superior Islamic civilization.”
Khamenei accuses the United States and Israel
Khamenei described the United States and Israel as the “sworn enemies” of Islamic unity and friendship. He argued that Washington and Tel Aviv were enemies not only of Iran but of the “entire” Islamic world.
Timeline of the conflict between Iran and the United States
Tensions in the Middle East rose after the United States and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran in late February. The authorities in Tehran, meanwhile, carried out retaliatory attacks against countries hosting U.S. forces in the region.
Iran and the United States agreed to a ceasefire in April, while the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding in June to end the military conflict and reach a lasting peace agreement.
The agreement collapsed last month, and Tehran and Washington carried out reciprocal attacks for nearly two weeks. U.S. President Donald Trump halted the bombardment after reports that talks were being held to end the conflict.
