New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani welcomed Palestinian families from the Gaza Strip to the city's official mayoral residence, Gracie Mansion.
The meeting took place on the evening of September 23. Mamdani sat with the Palestinian families around the same table before joining them in planting an olive tree in the residence's garden.
On September 24, Mamdani shared footage of the meeting on his social media account. The post came as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was addressing the UN General Assembly in New York.

Mamdani wrote in his post: “Last night, I planted an olive tree at Gracie Mansion with Palestinian families from Gaza. Let peace be our future.”
Netanyahu also referred to Mamdani during his address to the UN General Assembly and accused the New York mayor of antisemitism. Mamdani later responded to Netanyahu's remarks, describing the allegations against him as “baseless lies.”

Mamdani's meeting with the Palestinian families from Gaza and the olive-tree planting took place as UN General Assembly meetings dominated the agenda in New York, allowing Mamdani to highlight his message about Palestine and peace.
