The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the statement issued at the end of the BRICS leaders’ summit, saying it contained language supporting the rights of the Palestinian people. The ministry particularly backed the calls to maintain the ceasefire in Gaza and ensure that humanitarian aid reaches the region fully and without obstruction.
The statement opposed the forced removal of Palestinians from their lands and the areas where they live, including Jerusalem. It also called for ending the Israeli occupation, supporting a two-state solution and granting the State of Palestine full membership in the United Nations.
Calls concerning Gaza and Jerusalem
The BRICS statement expressed concern over the violence continuing in the Gaza Strip despite the ongoing ceasefire. It called for an end to policies aimed at forcibly displacing Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
The joint statement opposed arrangements that could weaken the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people or legitimize and prolong the occupation. The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also welcomed the support expressed for the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.
The ministry also supported the call to protect holy sites in Jerusalem and guarantee access to them.
Call for implementation of the statement
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the positions expressed in the BRICS statement were consistent with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions. The ministry called for these positions not to remain mere declarations but to be turned into concrete, implementable steps.
The statement called on the international community to assume its legal and political responsibilities to implement international legitimacy resolutions. The ministry also called for an end to displacement, settlement expansion and annexation practices, as well as the protection of the Palestinian people and enabling them to exercise their right to self-determination.
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Israeli occupation must end to guarantee the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent and sovereign state on their own land, with Jerusalem as its capital.
