U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States would maintain economic pressure on Iran, adding that Iran’s economic losses would continue if it fired on American military vessels.
Speaking to reporters after a joint news conference with Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld during the second leg of his South America visit, Rubio argued that Iran had not been offered anything that would change the current situation or the course of developments.
Rubio alleged that Iran had fired on American military vessels and said Iranian tankers had been damaged in response. He claimed that Iran had been unable to hit American ships but had lost five tankers.
The U.S. secretary of state also alleged that four Iranian tankers were damaged the previous night and that one tanker sank.
