Russia and Ukraine carried out a new prisoner-of-war exchange at the Novaya Guta border crossing between Belarus and Ukraine, with each side receiving 270 of its soldiers in the first exchange since last August.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced the return of 270 Russian military personnel in exchange for 270 Ukrainian prisoners, saying the released Russians were receiving medical and psychological care in Belarus before being transferred to Russia.
Zelenskyy: Some had been held since 2022
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the exchange as an important outcome, saying that many of those who returned had been held captive since 2022.
A day earlier, the two sides had exchanged the remains of 277 soldiers each at the same crossing, while 12 families were reunited through mediation by the International Committee of the Red Cross.
