The courtyard of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem saw Israeli settlers enter under the protection of Israeli forces during Yom Kippur. On Sunday, around 570 settlers performed Talmudic rituals and prayers in the courtyard.
The Jerusalem Governorate said that, as of 10 a.m. local time, this number of settlers had entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The governorate said hundreds of settlers had gathered near the Moroccan Gate before entering.
Earlier on Sunday morning, around 100 Israeli settlers had also entered the mosque’s courtyard under the protection of Israeli forces and performed rituals and prayers. The previous night, some settlers held Talmudic rituals in front of the Gate of Mercy on the outside of the walls surrounding the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Security measures tightened at the Western Wall
The Jerusalem Governorate also said that Israel’s prime minister, several government ministers and thousands of settlers had gone to the Western Wall plaza in the Old City area of East Jerusalem the previous night. The governorate said the settlers reached the plaza via Al-Wad Street in the Old City, while tight security measures were imposed in the area.
The governorate had issued warnings days earlier that activity around the Al-Aqsa Mosque increased during the Jewish holidays and that there were attempts to impose new religious rituals in the area.
Activity around Al-Aqsa during the Jewish holidays
Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement, is considered one of the important religious days for Jews. The day is marked by fasting, prayer and the suspension of most daily activities. The Jewish holidays began with the Hebrew New Year on September 12 and 13, followed by Sukkot from September 26 to October 2 and Simchat Torah on October 3.
Recently, settlers’ entries into the Al-Aqsa Mosque have increased under the protection of Israeli police and amid extensive security measures in the Old City and around the mosque. Palestinian and Jordanian officials have warned against attempts to create a new reality at the mosque and divide the site by time or space.
Israeli police have allowed settlers to enter the Al-Aqsa Mosque unilaterally since 2003. The Islamic Waqf Administration in Jerusalem has renewed its call for these incursions to be halted.
