A forest near the village of Bir Ajam in Syria’s southern Quneitra province was targeted by Israeli artillery fire on Sunday. Three artillery shells were fired at the forest, and the shells landed in the wooded area.
Initial information indicated that no one was injured in the attack.
Attacks in the Quneitra countryside
Two days before the incident, Israeli forces had also fired numerous artillery shells at the area around the town of Hamidiya in the Quneitra countryside and at Bat al-Warda Hill near the town of Beit Jinn in the Damascus countryside.
Israel’s expanding control in Syria
After the Bashar al-Assad administration was overthrown on December 8, 2024, Israel expanded the area it controlled in Syrian territory. In addition to the disengagement zone, Israel also took control of several points on the Syrian side of Mount Hermon.
During this period, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the agreement on the separation of forces had collapsed. Under the agreement, the buffer zone under Syrian sovereignty separates Syrian and Israeli forces, while the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force monitors its implementation.
Reactions to violations in Quneitra
Israel’s border violations in Quneitra have increased recently. Residents of the area complain about incursions into the agricultural land on which they make their livelihoods, the destruction of hundreds of dunams of forest, the detention of people and searches of pedestrians at military checkpoints.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said during a news conference in Damascus on July 26, held during his visit to Syria, that violations of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity were unacceptable. Guterres called on Israel to comply with the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement.
