The opening session of the newly elected parliament in Syria was unexpectedly postponed. The country's High Election Committee announced that the first session of the People's Assembly, previously scheduled to convene in the capital Damascus on Monday, July 6, 2026, has been postponed to a later date. The committee did not share any details about the reason for the postponement.
The postponement decision came just a few days after President Ahmed al-Sharaa appointed the new assembly members by decree number 2026/143. This decree includes the names of all members, including the one-third complementary members appointed by the president.
According to Syria's interim electoral system, 140 members of the 210-seat People's Assembly are elected through electoral boards in the provinces, while the remaining 70 members are directly appointed by the president, forming the one-third quota in the assembly.
