Washington signaled retaliation against Iran after missile and drone attacks targeted U.S. forces in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. U.S. President Donald Trump said there would be a response to the attacks.
Trump said the United States would respond to the attacks forcefully, adding, “We will hit them hard. There will be retaliation.”
U.S. defenses intercepted most of the incoming fire
Trump said U.S. air defense systems had intercepted most of the incoming fire. He added that U.S. forces allowed one missile to pass through their airspace after determining that it could not strike an important target.
Revolutionary Guards say air bases were targeted
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for the attack and said the King Hussein and Azraq air bases in Jordan had been targeted with ballistic missiles. The statement said the Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates was attacked with explosive-laden drones.
The Revolutionary Guard said the operation was retaliation for the U.S. attack on Larak Island on Sunday, which was aimed at preventing the placement of naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical passage for global oil transportation.
Trump remains wary of Tehran’s request for talks
Trump said Tehran had requested talks but that he remained cautious about the possibility of diplomatic progress. He also said the impact of U.S. sanctions on Iran was beginning to be felt strongly.
