As US Vice President JD Vance spoke at a midterm rally in Hendersonville, North Carolina, on Oct. 19, a man sitting directly behind him stood up and demanded the release of the Epstein files. The rally was held to support Jennifer Balkcom, the Republican candidate for Congress.
Security guards led the protester out as attendees chanted "USA." Vance then said: "Ladies and gentlemen, I have to amend something I said earlier. I said that we have had zero illegal border crossings in the United States of America. But one isn't bad, right?" The remark was seen as mockery implying the protester was an illegal immigrant and was met with laughter in the hall.
Criticism of Vance
California Gov. Gavin Newsom's press office called the remark insulting: "It's insulting to suggest only 'illegal immigrants' care about justice for victims and accountability for perpetrators. Most American citizens do too!" Some critics also accused Vance of judging the protester by his appearance.
Jeffrey Epstein, a previously convicted sex offender, died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Demands to release the files from the investigation into his case have become one of the most sensitive issues in Washington ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
