In an article published in Egypt’s official newspapers, Xi Jinping said relations between China and Egypt were experiencing one of the best periods in their history after 70 years of friendship. The Chinese President called for deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership and building a community with a shared future.
In this context, Xi proposed strengthening mutual trust, supporting core interests and expanding high-quality cooperation under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. Xi’s visits to Egypt and diplomatic history
China’s Foreign Ministry announced that Xi Jinping would undertake an overseas tour between August 30 and September 3.
Xi Jinping made his first visit to Egypt in January 2016 after assuming the presidency. During the visit, which aimed to strengthen economic cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, Xi met with Sisi and attended a ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Sisi most recently visited China in May 2024.
Egypt and China established diplomatic relations in 1956. Egypt became the first Arab and African country to recognize the People’s Republic of China.
Mutual support has been a prominent feature of relations between the two countries. China supported Egypt during the Suez Crisis in 1956, while Egypt supported China’s restoration of its seat at the United Nations in 1971.
The strategic partnership was announced in 1999. Relations were elevated to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership during Sisi’s visit to Beijing in December 2014.
