The Yemeni army's announcement that the Houthis had launched missiles toward the city of Mokha and the Red Sea brought military activity in the country back into focus as the regional effects of the Gaza war continued.
The Yemeni army said the Houthis launched two hypersonic ballistic missiles on Monday from east of Taiz toward the southwestern city of Mokha and the Red Sea.
The army's Taiz Military Axis said the missiles were fired from the headquarters of the former 170th Air Defense Brigade on Mount Oman, east of Taiz. The area from which the missiles were launched is under Houthi control, it said.
The Houthis did not immediately respond to the statement.
Mokha targeted by seven drones
The National Resistance Forces, allied with Yemen's government, announced a day before the missile statement that the city of Mokha had been targeted by seven drones.
No casualties or material damage were reported after the missiles were launched. The latest development indicated increased military activity in Yemen after a prolonged period of relative calm.
Nearly 12 years of war in Yemen
Yemen had experienced a relatively calm period since April 2022, following nearly 12 years of war between government forces backed by a Saudi-led coalition and the Iran-backed Houthis, who seized control of the capital, Sana'a, and large parts of the country in 2014.
The Houthis became more involved in regional conflicts from late 2023, when the war in Gaza began. The group carried out attacks against Israel and commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
Renewed clashes in Yemen in recent weeks have increased concerns that a full-scale war could return.
