An announcement said that a Houthi-affiliated commander was killed on Yemen's western coast following a military escalation between government forces and the Houthis west of Taiz.
Yemen government media announced that military commander Mohammed Harith Ali Mutlaq al-Alawi was killed during clashes with the army. No details were provided about the circumstances of al-Alawi's death, the timing of the clashes or the exact location of the incident.
The Houthis did not immediately comment on al-Alawi's reported death.
Another Houthi commander announced killed in Taiz
The government-affiliated National Resistance Forces announced a day earlier that Houthi commander Kamil Khalil Nasser al-Wazir had been killed along with several aides in the al-Kadha area west of Taiz province. The announcement said al-Wazir used the code name “Abu Ali al-Madani.”
Mutual attacks, ballistic missiles and armed drones were used in clashes west of Taiz on Thursday.
One of the most significant rounds of fighting since the 2022 truce
The military escalation west of Taiz ranks among the region's most significant rounds of fighting since the 2022 United Nations truce. The United Nations has warned that Yemen could be drawn back into large-scale fighting.
The Houthis have controlled the capital, Sanaa, and several cities since September 2014. Yemen's internationally recognized government and forces affiliated with it control large areas in the country's south, east and west.
