Türkiye’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ahmet Yıldız, said at a UN Security Council session convened to discuss Syria’s chemical disarmament that the Syrian government was demonstrating a strong will to resolve the issue.
Speaking at Thursday’s session on the situation in the Middle East, Yıldız said the chemical weapons issue was among the most serious legacies left by the deposed Bashar al-Assad administration.
Call for transparency and international coordination
Yıldız said Syria’s new government was determined to resolve the issue transparently and through direct cooperation with the international community.
Yıldız said practical, phased and coordinated cooperation with Syria was needed to achieve lasting progress on the issue, adding that conditions on the ground also had to be taken into account. He said Türkiye continued to support Syria and was continuing to strengthen the country’s technical and logistical capacity.
Warning over Israeli airstrikes
Yıldız said Türkiye welcomed Syria’s progress on the chemical weapons issue, adding that identifying and destroying elements left from the previous administration’s chemical weapons program presented significant challenges.
Yıldız said Israeli airstrikes on possible chemical weapons facilities after the fall of the previous administration had compounded these challenges, warning of the possibility that hazardous substances could leak and put civilians living nearby at risk.
Yıldız said the strikes could damage critical evidence needed to establish the facts surrounding the past use of chemical weapons and ensure accountability. He reiterated Türkiye’s strong support for Syria’s efforts on the chemical weapons issue and called on all UN member states to provide full support for this work.
